COMMAND MODE SYNTAX: ph [-s server] [-p port] [-t type] [-f field1,field2,...] [-mMrRbBTlLF] query ph [-s server] [-p port] [-t type] [-f field1,field2,...] [-mMnNrRbBTlLFcC] INTERACTIVE MODE SYNTAX: query [name-of-field=]value-of-field... [return {all|name-of- field...}] SUMMARY The function of the "ph" command varies according to whether it is used in "command-line mode" (from the operating system prompt) or "interactive mode" (from inside ph at the "ph>" prompt). THE "PH" COMMAND IN COMMAND-LINE MODE In command-line mode, "ph" is the name of the program (executable file) that permits users to do Nameserver lookups (queries) directly from the operating system prompt. The query is processed and the results are printed to the screen (or can be redirected to a file or another output device). The example below shows how one can issue a Nameserver query in command-line mode using the "ph" command. (Note that the session begins at the operating system prompt. Once the matching entries are printed, the user is returned to the system prompt.): ux1 3> ph paul pomes ---------------------------------------- name: pomes paul phone: (217) 333-6262 address: 1429 dcl, MC 256 : 1304 w springfield : urbana, il 61801 department: computing services office title: sr res programmer email to: p-pomes@uiuc.edu (paul@uxc.cso.uiuc.edu) ---------------------------------------- ux1 4> If the "ph" command is issued at the operating system prompt without any arguments (i.e., a query expression), it takes the user to interactive mode where s/he is presented with the "ph>" prompt. Once inside ph, users can take advantage of the wide variety of Nameserver commands available in interactive mode (see help on "commands"). To use the "ph" command to enter interactive mode, simply type "ph" by itself. For example: ux1 4> ph $Date: 1992/08/17 13:35:39 $$Revision: 5.7 $ 100:Ph passwords may be obtained at CCSO Accounting, 1420 DCL. 100:Be sure to bring your University Id Card. You may not need 100:a password if you are using the login in your email field. 200:Database ready. ph> [ph is ready and waiting for you to enter a command] COMMAND-LINE MODE OPTIONS AND SWITCHES The "ph" command accepts many options and switches in command-line mode. All such options are explained in full in the help file called "manpage" (the Unix online manual page for ph). Ph options and switches can be used both when doing Nameserver lookups from the operating system prompt or when using the "ph" command to enter interactive mode. For instance, the "-t type" option tells ph to only display entries matching the data type specified. When used with an argument (a query expression), only those entries matching the specified type will be printed. The example below illustrates the use of the "t type" option in command-line mode (where "food" is the specified type and "king" is the argument): ux1 9> ph -t food king ---------------------------------------- name: Burger King phone: 398-8906 address: 2105 W Springfield, Champaign hours: Su-Th 7:00-23:00, Fr-Sa 7:00-1:00 other: fast american text: beef, fish, chicken, BBQ, salsa burgers, : drive-thru ---------------------------------------- name: Burger King phone: 384-1029 address: 309 E Green, Champaign hours: Su-We 7:00-2:00, Th 7:00-3:00, Fr-Sa 7:00-4:00 other: fast american text: beef, fish, chicken, BBQ, salsa burgers, : drive-thru ---------------------------------------- name: Hunan King phone: 344-0252 address: 313 E Green, Champaign hours: Fr-Su 11:00-23:00, Mo-Th 11:00-22:00 other: fast chinese text: full course meals ---------------------------------------- ux1 10> When used without an argument, the "-t type" option takes the user to interactive mode and sets the specified type as the default for queries. The example below sets the default data type to "food" and takes the user to interactive mode: ux1 11> ph -t food $Date: 1992/08/17 13:35:39 $$Revision: 5.7 $ 100:Ph passwords may be obtained at CCSO Accounting, 1420 DCL. 100:Be sure to bring your University Id Card. You may not need 100:a password if you are using the login in your email field. 200:Database ready. ph> Once in interactive mode, only entries matching the default type ("food") will be printed: ph> ph king ---------------------------------------- name: Burger King phone: 398-8906 address: 2105 W Springfield, Champaign hours: Su-Th 7:00-23:00, Fr-Sa 7:00-1:00 other: fast american text: beef, fish, chicken, BBQ, salsa burgers, : drive-thru ---------------------------------------- name: Burger King phone: 384-1029 address: 309 E Green, Champaign hours: Su-We 7:00-2:00, Th 7:00-3:00, Fr-Sa 7:00-4:00 other: fast american text: beef, fish, chicken, BBQ, salsa burgers, : drive-thru ---------------------------------------- name: Hunan King phone: 344-0252 address: 313 E Green, Champaign hours: Fr-Su 11:00-23:00, Mo-Th 11:00-22:00 other: fast chinese text: full course meals ---------------------------------------- ph> THE "PH" COMMAND IN INTERACTIVE MODE In interactive mode, the "ph" command is a synonym for and completely interchangeable with the "query" command, which is used to look up information in the Nameserver database. For more information on how the "ph" command is used in interactive mode, see help on "query". SEE ALSO: command-line_mode, interactive_mode, manpage, query, commands, type, switches
