Weather Situation A low pressure system in southern South Australia will deepen and move southeast into western Victoria later tonight. This low extends a series of troughs across the state, followed by a cold front on Friday. A high pressure ridge moves over western Victoria Saturday, travelling east through Bass Strait on Sunday. Forecast for the rest of Thursday 17 October Cloud and scattered showers increasing from the west, reaching central parts by early afternoon, then extending further east. Showers tending to isolated southeast. Thunderstorms are possible over western and central parts. Thunderstorms may become severe in the afternoon producing damaging winds the north west. Warm across the State, tending to hot in the far north. Generally light to moderate north to northeasterly wind. Winds become fresh in the afternoon over western districts and through parts of the central and then again about the Great Dividing Range over night. Fire Danger: High fire danger for the Mallee. Forecast for Friday 18 October Partly cloudy with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms across most of the State. Severe thunderstorms, with damaging winds, large hail and heavy rainfall are likely over the North East and adjacent parts of the Northern Country, and are possible through central and eastern districts and parts of the South West. A warm day, tending mild in the south west during the afternoon. Moderate northerly winds, tending fresh from the west during the afternoon and turning fresh to strong westerlies from the west during the early evening. Winds increase to fresh to strong through the Metropolitan area from the early morning. Forecast for Saturday 19 October Cloudy with showers on and south of the ranges, initially scattered east of Melbourne, then becoming isolated in the afternoon. Partly cloudy and mostly dry in the north. A mild to cool day with moderate to fresh south to south westerly winds. Winds tending fresh to strong about the southern coasts. Forecast for Sunday 20 October Partly cloudy and mostly dry in the south, possible isolated showers across the Yarra and Strzelecki Ranges and East Gippsland. Mostly sunny and dry in the north. A mild to cool day across most of the State, tending warm in the far north. Light to moderate south to southwesterly winds across the State, tending southeasterly from the west in the evening.
