Weather Situation A high pressure ridge lies across much of the state, extending from a high pressure system in the Tasman Sea. The ridge will persist for the next few days. A weak trough lies across the southeastern interior of Queensland. The trough will weaken today. A deeper trough may move east across western and interior Queensland from Friday, reaching southeastern and central Queensland over the weekend. This trough is likely to drive shower and thunderstorm activity as it moves eastwards. Forecast for the rest of Thursday 17 October Isolated showers in southeast Queensland and near the tropical east coast, tending scattered at times north of Townsville. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms in far southwestern Queensland. Mostly sunny elsewhere. Fresh and gusty northeast to northwesterly winds leading to elevated fire dangers in western and southern interior Queensland, light to moderate northeast to southeasterly winds elsewhere. Maximum and minimum temperatures tending well above average across much of inland Queensland south of Georgetown, tending near or slightly above average elsewhere. Fire Danger: High fire dangers in western and southern interior Queensland, locally extreme in the Channel Country. Forecast for Friday 18 October Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms spreading across western and southern Queensland, tending scattered at times over the southeastern inland. Severe thunderstorms possible in southwestern Queensland. Isolated showers about the northeast tropical coast north of Townsville and the northern Peninsula. Mostly sunny elsewhere. Fresh and gusty northwest to southwesterly winds leading to elevated fire dangers in western and southern interior Queensland. Maximum and minimum temperatures above average in areas south of Georgetown, tending well above average about the interior. Forecast for Saturday 19 October Isolated showers and possible thunderstorm extending in a band from northwestern Queensland to southeastern Queensland, with severe thunderstorms possible in southeastern Queensland. Mostly sunny elsewhere. Fresh and warm west to northwesterly winds may result in elevated fire dangers about the southeastern interior. Maximum temperatures above average in central and eastern districts, near average in the west. Minimum temperatures above average in the south and west, near average elsewhere. Forecast for Sunday 20 October Isolated showers in eastern Queensland, the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Peninsula. Isolated thunderstorms possible in the Gulf Country. Mostly sunny elsewhere. Temperatures well above average in central and southeastern Queensland, near average elsewhere. Outlook for Monday 21 October to Wednesday 23 October Isolated showers in eastern Queensland, the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Peninsula.
