However the Super GameBoy Enhanced Games list is no where near complete, so please email any additions! =============================================================================== ---------------------------------------- 2. INTRODUCTION TO THE SUPER GAMEBOY ---------------------------------------- =============================================================================== The Super GameBoy is a cartridge that allows you to play original GameBoy games on your television, in colour. There are also extra features to make using this device more fun, such as changeable colour palettes and borders. To set up the Super GameBoy, get an original GameBoy game (or an original GameBoy compatible GameBoy colour game) and insert it into the Super GameBoy cartridge. Pop this into your SNES, and away you go! You will be introduced with a Super GameBoy opening screen, and then the game begins (the border also changes if the game has a unique one built in). If the error screen appears, showing a cartridge with a cross through it, then turn off your SNES and make sure that the GameBoy game is in properly. Controls -------- The Start, Select, A and B buttons are the same as the ones that are used during the GameBoy game. The X button switches between the original game palette and a customised palette. Pressing the L and R buttons bring up the System Menu. You can use two controllers, so that you can play the game with controller 1, and open and browse the System Menu with controller 2. Also, you can change the controls to an extent via an option in the System Menu. The SNES mouse is also compatible when using the System Menu. You can only plug it into port 2 (with a controller still in port 1). The mouse then controls the hand/pen used to navigate the system menu. Pressing both buttons together opens the system menu, the left mouse button is used to select icons (or when held to use pens etc) or change a palette / increase a number, and the right mouse button changes a palette or decreases a number. Compatible Cartridges --------------------- The Super GameBoy is not compatible with every GameBoy cartridge. You can only use the original GameBoy games, and GameBoy colour games that can play on the original GameBoy (see the game's manual for compatibility). This means that you cannot use GameBoy Advance games, or most of the GameBoy colour games. Also, like all the GameBoy systems, it can play games from any region (meaning you can play Japanese games on your USA console). spooie has told me that "the Color Gameboy games with the BLACK/COLORED cases are the ones that can be used with the Super Gameboy, and the CLEAR carted ones that can't." I think this is correct, and I hope you can use it as a guideline. ** Note: You cannot use the link cable with the Super GameBoy, simply because there isn't a link port on the cartridge. However I do believe that an updated version only realised in Japan does include a link port. Thegame1988 has told also that the Super Game Boy 2 was actually also released in America in a special deal on QVC. =============================================================================== ------------------ 3. SYSTEM MENU ------------------ =============================================================================== The System Menu, opened with pressing both the L and R buttons with any controller, enables you to customise the game settings. Once you enter the system menu, you stop controlling the game (bar the Start and Select buttons) and start controlling the system menu. So be sure to pause the game or enter a menu before you access the System Menu. ----------- Game Screen ----------- This is the game screen when the system menu is open. +--------------------------------+ | _ 2 | ||_| | | 3 +-------------------+ | | | | | | | | | | | 1 | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | +-------------------+ | | ________4__________ | | |___|___|___|___|___| | +--------------------------------+ 1 - Game Play Screen The Game Play Screen. 2 - Border The Border that surrounds the game screen. 3 - Controller or Mouse Icon Shows what device is being used; either a controller, or mouse. 4 - System Menu Window The main system menu. ------------------ System Menu Window ------------------ The System Menu Window is show at the bottom of the screen when the System Menu has been opened. +-------------------------------------------+ | +---+ +---+ +---+ +---+ +---+ | | | 1 | | 2 | | 3 | | 4 | | 5 | | | +---+ +---+ +---+ +---+ +---+ | +-------------------------------------------+ 1 - Colour Palette 2 - Borders 3 - Button Settings 4 - Custom Colours 5 - Graffiti These are the icons that you can select, which will take you to the corresponding area. Move the arrow over to one of the icons, then press the A button to enter that area. To quit each area, press the icon again (found either on the far left or right) and you will be returned to the main System Menu. The areas are covered in detail in the following sub-sections. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3.01. Colour Palette =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The colour palette allows you to change the colours of the game screen. There are a number of preset palettes for you choose from, or you can use one that you created yourself in the Custom Colours area (see section 3-04. Custom Colours). +-------------------------------------------------------+ | +---+ | +---+ +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | I | | | S | # | A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H | C | | | +---+ | +---+ +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | +-------------------------------------------------------+ The Icon on the far left (I on the diagram) returns you back to main system menu. You can change your colour palette by selecting the icons labelled A to H and you can change these by pressing the numbered icon to left of them (# on the diagram). This means that you have 32 preset colour palettes to choose from. The icon second from the left (S on the diagram) is the SGB Enhanced palette icon, which is a palette that comes with it if the game is enhanced, often showing the correct colours. The one on the far right (C on the diagram) is the Custom Colour icon, which is a palette that you have devised your self in the Custom Colours section (see section 3-04. Custom Colours). Note that you can change between the original palette and the one that you have chosen here by pressing the X button at any time. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3.02. Borders =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The Borders section allows you to change the border that surrounds the game screen. +-------------------------------------------------------+ | +---+ | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | I | | | S | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | G | | | +---+ | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | +-------------------------------------------------------+ There are a number of borders to choose from. The icon on the far left takes you back to the main system menu. The Super GameBoy enhanced Icon (labelled S on the diagram) is a border that comes with certain enhanced games. These are automatically loaded on the game start up if there is one available. The other borders, labelled 1 to 9, are preset ones. The last icon on the right (labelled G on the diagram) is the border that you created in the Graffiti section (see section 3-05. Graffiti). Here are descriptions of the borders that come with it (1 to 9 on the diagram)- 1 - GameBoy Original Border. Looks as if you are playing on the original Game Boy. 2 - No Border. Just coloured black. 3 - Chequered walls, each with a window showing clouds. 4 - Pulped grainy wood effect. 5 - Countryside, showing a tree and a log cabin on the left. The game screen is presented on a sign post. 6 - Movie Theatre. The game screen is the movie screen, and there are people sitting in seats looking toward the screen. 7 - Cats littered around the screen, with a multicoloured backdrop. 8 - A chequered desk, with pencils on the right. 9 - One of those 3D confusing rooms, with upside down staircases and the like. Borders 3 to 9 all have screen savers. These can be viewed by not touching any buttons for a few minutes, or by pressing L,L,L,L,R (you may have to do this twice) when the system menu is off for it to animate. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3.03. Selecting one of the 'Type' icons changes your controls, which are shown on the right. Type A - X Type B - X B A B A A B Not dramatic changes, are they? The X button serves as a way to change the colour palettes between the default palette and one that you have selected in Colour Palette section. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3.04. Custom Colours =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= In this section, you can create a custom palette with what colours you want. +--------------------------------+ | _ | ||_| PASSWD:####-####-#### | | +-------------------+ | | | | | | | | | | +---| 1 | | | | | | | | | 2 | | C | | | | | | | +---+-------------------+ F | | P P P P P P ___| | R A A A A S P P P P P P | I | +--------------------------------+ The Icon on the far right (I on the diagram) returns you back to main system menu. The Game Screen (1 on the diagram) is in the middle. In the bottom left are the four colours that make up the palette (A on the diagram). You can change the colours in two ways. To get a totally different colour, select one of the colours on the right (P on the diagram) and then select one of the palette colours to overwrite it. You can get more paint colours by selecting the icon labelled S on the diagram; this means that you can choose from a total of 52 different colours. Once you have selected your colour, you can then change the shading of it. Above and below the palette colours is a white and black tab; pressing the white one will make the colour lighter, pressing the black one will make it darker. You can see the different shades in the box on the left hand side of the screen (2 on the diagram). Pressing the R icon (bottom right; R on the diagram) undo's the last change. The C icon on the right (C on the diagram) clears all changes and resorts back to the original palette, and the camera icon on the right (F on the diagram) freezes the screen. The game still resumes; you just cannot see it, so be aware of this. By selecting the right shades you can create better palettes for playing. Once you have got a palette that you like, then note down the password at the top of the screen so you can use it again later. To input a password, then select the password at the top of the screen and use the A button to increase a number and the B button to decrease a number. You can write the passwords in the manual, or on paper (or on somewhere on your body, whatever). ** Note: The password function is the only way of saving your palettes. They are not saved on the cartridge. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3.05. Graffiti =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This section of the system menu allows you to draw around the border, and even on the screen. +--------------------------------+ | | | +-------------------+ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | +-------------------+ | |________________________________| | C PPPPPPPPPPPP R TT H B W I | +--------------------------------+ The Icon on the far right (I on the diagram) returns you back to main system menu. There are 12 different colours of paint available to you that you may draw with (P on the diagram). Select one to use that colour. There are two thicknesses available to you, thick and thin (T on the diagram). The two icons on the right, coloured Black and White (B and W on the diagram) decide if you can draw on the game screen or not. Selecting black restricts you from drawing on the screen, whereas selecting white allows you to draw on the screen. To erase certain parts of the screen, select the Rainbow hand icon (H on the diagram). Use this to paint on certain parts of the screen that you want to be removed with a shining rainbow colour. When you are finished, press the bomb icon at the bottom of the screen to erase those sections that you drawn on. To totally nuke the screen and erase everything, press the C icon (C on the diagram) and you will have an empty screen to work with. ** Note: You cannot save what you have done here. So when you switch off your SNES, they are gone, lost forever. =============================================================================== ------------------------------------------- 4. SUPER GAMEBOY ENHANCED GAMES LISTING ------------------------------------------- =============================================================================== Many GameBoy games that were released after the Super GameBoy were programmed with special features that could be used with this device. These features were either a proper palette, a unique border, or other things. Most of the games that have these things programmed with the Super GameBoy in mind have the following icon on - +-----------+ | | | | | | | S u p e r | | GAME BOY | | | | | | GAME PAK | +-----------| The games with this icon on still work perfectly fine with GameBoy systems. In this section is a list of games that have these features, with what sort of things they contain. A HUGE thanks to all the contributors so far that have contacted me through the GameFAQ's message boards or email, and please, keep sending more additions! Contact details are at the top of the guide. ----------------------------- Errors and Non-Working Titles ----------------------------- I have created this section to inform people about errors that you may come across in certain games played by the Super GameBoy, and titles that don't work at all. Conker's Pocket Tales --------------------- Mr Crispy says that "I'm trying to surpress my memory of it; while it's a dual mode game, it erases all the save data if you play it in one mode and then try to play it in the other". Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening --------------------------------- DarkBubble says that "I'm not certain, but the standard black and white version of Link's Awakening might have problems with the real(not emulated) SGB. I had borrowed an SGB from my friend along with his copy of LA, only to find that when he tried to play the game on an actual Gameboy, it was dead. I need to ask him if he's still got the cart so I can see if it might still work on the SGB." Note that I have tried this myself, and my copy of Link's Awakening works fine still on all my GameBoy systems. This might be a one off, but it is work noteing regardless. Venom3D has also reported that the only problem he encountered was during the credits and that they wouldn't display properly. Mega Memory Card (made by Interact) ----------------------------------- theclaw2 says - "The Mega Memory Card (made by Interact) doesn't work properly in a Super Game Boy. You can start the attached game normally with it's switch set to off. However, if that switch is on, the system stalls where it says "MegaMem" and the GB cartridge icon will have a red X over it." =============================================================================== -------------- 5. SECRETS -------------- =============================================================================== These are from the GameFAQ's codes page for the Super GameBoy. Thanks goes out to the contributors of these codes (incrediblehark, Harvest teen5). ------------- Screen Savers ------------- Borders 3 to 9 have screen savers. These can be viewed by not touching any buttons for a few minutes, or by pressing L,L,L,L,R (you may have to do this twice) when the system menu is off for it to animate. ------------- Staff Credits ------------- When the Super GameBoy loads up, press L,L,L,R,R,R,L,L,L,R,R,R,R,R,R,R to view the staff credits. =============================================================================== ------------ 6. FAQ'S ------------ =============================================================================== =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Q. Which is better? The Super GameBoy, or the GameBoy Player (for the GameCube)? A. Overall, the GameBoy Player. The GameBoy Player has a 60Hz mode (in PAL regions), you can make the screen bigger, change games without turning off the console, and play all GameBoy games. However the Super GameBoy is better for playing most of the games it can play, as the controller is most suited, you can change the colour palette and the enhanced features, such as the borders, are great. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Q. Can I play import games with the Super GameBoy? A. Yes. Just like any other GameBoy system, you can play games from any region (eg. Japanese games on your US console). =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Q. Can I link games together via a link cable. A. No. There isn't a link cable port featured in the design, although an updated version of the Super GameBoy was released only in Japan with one included. Thegame1988 has told also that the Super Game Boy 2 was actually also released in America in a special deal on QVC. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Q. Why does an error screen keep appearing when I load up a certain game? A. First off, make sure that the GameBoy cartridge is correctly inserted. Make sure the cart's connectors are clean (I don't know how to clean them so don't ask). I have found that my older Gameboy titles (Super Mario Land, Tetris) make more startup error messages than my other titles, so just keep trying and they should work eventually. Other than that, maybe your game is broke. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Q. Some of my GameBoy colour games don't work with the Super GameBoy. Why? A. Not all the GameBoy colour games could work with the original GameBoy system. Check the games packaging and manual to see if they work or not. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= I will put more questions in this section at later versions. Contact me if you need to ask something (see the beginning of the guide... and PLEASE don't be lazy, look for though the FAQ first for what you need before contacting me). =============================================================================== ------------------------------------ 7.
