INTRODUCTION G0100 =============================================================================== Welcome to Auto-Upturn for the NES, a puzzle game by Sachen released in 1991. Suggestions, comments or errors, e-mail me about it. Enjoy! =============================================================================== 02.) OVERVIEW & CONTROLS G0200 =============================================================================== Auto-Upturn is often mistaken for a slide puzzle game. It might look like that at first but instead of sliding pieces, the cat will walk on top of these tiles and they only visually become white space. Instead, the game consists of picking up pieces and placing them where they are supposed to go. And all this while avoiding enemies and keeping an eye on the time limit. Controls: ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ A-Button: Pick up/place pieces START: Pause the game, also shows the current puzzle without the cat nor enemies. Display: ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ _______________________ | _________________ | | | | | | | | | | | |--|--|--|--|--|--| | | | | | | | | | | | |--|--|--|--|--|--| | | | | | | | | | | | |--|--|--|--|--|--| | | | | | | | | | | | |--|--|--|--|--|--| | |__|__|__|__|__|__|__|__| | Health |Ti| | | Time Score 1up |le| | ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ The upper area has the scattered puzzle pieces when you begin the game. Health is the amount of hearts you have left, and are allowed to be caught from the enemy. Usually they take off one heart, sometimes only half. Time, the remaining time left to solve the puzzle. It starts with 10 minutes. Score is the point total from level to level as you solve the puzzles. You only get points at the end, for the amount of time and lives left. 1up is the number of lives left. You start each puzzle with 2 extras and they also count towards the score if left over at the end. Tile is the current puzzle piece in your hands. =============================================================================== 03.) AUTO-UPTURN G0300 =============================================================================== Puzzles: ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ When each round starts you are shown a picture of the puzzle solution, for a millisecond only. If you missed it, or want a plain easier solution you can have a look at my solutions on GameFAQs here: http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/file/auto_upturn_sol.png Sorry some had to be censored to be posted ^_^ To solve the puzzles, simply pick up pieces and place them where they are supposed to be. You need to stand in front of the pieces, not on top, to pick them up. You cannot pick up a piece if an enemy is standing on it, and the same goes for trying to place one. Enemies: ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Each board has two kinds of enemies randomly appearing and then later disappearing. One is a walking enemy, the other a flying enemy. They will usually just go around aimlessly but sometimes seek you out so be careful. More annoying is when they appear right where you are standing without prior warning. If you get hit by a walkers, the currently held puzzle piece will return to the available spot. If you get hit by flyers you will still keep it, however. Enemies block the puzzle piece they are standing on, so you cannot pick it up at that time, nor place another one on that spot. You can defeat the enemies one way only, by making them walk into the hole, the only blank spot on the puzzle if you are holding a piece. Don't go out hunting them though, as another one will just pop out somewhere else. It is a reasonably good way to avoid being cornered, but could screw up the puzzle building a little. Health: ¯¯¯¯¯¯ You start the game with 3 lives and each live is four hearts. Getting hit by enemies takes off either half or one full heart. Time: ¯¯¯¯ There is a time limit of 10:00 minutes for each puzzle. Score: ¯¯¯¯¯ At the end of a puzzle you get points for time and lives left. Each second on the clock is 20 points. Each live left over is 3000 points. The score is kept from round to round for an overall score. Solutions: ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ I will try to give you a description of each puzzle picture if you do not wish to use the solutions, or are simply looking for another approach. Some are hard to explain, I highly suggest the picture solution. Default Grid: 1 2 3 4 5 6 A B C D E *Round 1: A1 A large leaf in the top left corner pointing into the bottom left corner. Some parts in Round 5 are too hard to describe imho and most people will surely check out the pictures instead anyway to not make it worth writing an essay describing tiny pixel variations. The puzzle itself is hard and doesn't gel together the pieces to make this any easier. =============================================================================== YY.) MINI-REVIEW GYY00 =============================================================================== This isn't meant to be a full review, just a few notes about the game's pros and cons as well as other things worth mentioning. Gameplay: 1/10 Where to start? The two enemies are vicious and badly designed. They randomly go about on the board and once in a while decide to hunt you down for a short while. It is often impossible to avoid them, too. The puzzle solution is only shown to you for a millisecond and might give you an idea of how it looks like, but still make it extremely frustrating to know where certain pieces go. Having a solution handy on the other hand, will make the puzzle part redundant and the entire game consists of avoiding those annoying enemies. These two gameplays do not work well together. The worst has to be the snow dragon puzzle, where half of the pieces look the same. Some puzzles are actually made that it is very easy to see how they belong together. Puzzles are nice, but it is frustrating to have to piece this together while you are hunted and on a time limit. Luckily there is a pause mode which lets you see all the tiles and get some strategy into your mind. Then there are only seven puzzles, if you happen to not give up during the first round. There could be more puzzles with the same characters. Why design different ones for the stages if don't make the useful? And once in a while I thought there might be some theme going with matching characters to the current picture, but then it turns out to be another idea that went forgotten towards the end, when you piece together a naked girl. Scoring also makes no sense, you do get a score at the end up the game does not keep any high scores, and does not even show it to you at the end. Graphics: 5/10 Easily the best the game has to offer. The characters is kind of cute and the visual interface is also acceptable. Some puzzles do look nice and some unexpected nudie pictures made me smile, thinking Sachen did it again with their naughty stuff from out of nowhere. However, these pictures are very good looking compared to some earlier stuff like in Honey Peach. Sound: 1/10 Extremely annoying. Mute that TV straight away as otherwise you will just get a headache within minutes. And if the music is not bad enough you have the horrid beeping if you have been touched by an enemy. Sound is different on the various puzzles, but similarly annoying as well. Overall: 1/10 Really horrible, stay away from this one. And if you do not listen to this advice then you will notice it yourself as soon as that first round starts up. I would be surprised if you play more than the first puzzle. It is only seven rounds to this does not even make it worth getting. The decent graphics alone can't save this. It's a real shame, just make it a normal puzzle game, be it sliding or what you do now without the silly enemies and we might be enjoying this some more. =============================================================================== ZZ.)
