This guide assumes that the player is familiar with Animal Crossing, and concentrates on things that are different in DnMe+ when compared to AC. Much of the DnMe+ gameplay is the same as that in AC. ****************************************************************************** 2) TECHNICAL GAMEPLAY ****************************************************************************** Doubutsu no Mori e+ was manufactured to play in a Japanese Nintendo GameCube. It cannot function in a non-Japanese GCN without the assistance of additional software, such as FreeLoader. The game also uses Japanese file-saving protocols when saving to a memory card. Japanese and North American GCN game files cannot be saved on the same memory card. The village data takes up 57 blocks of memory card space. Saved letter storage at the [Post Office] Yuubinkyoku uses up to 5 blocks. Also, saved NES data and saved designs require additional space. To save all DnMe+ data on the same memory card, you need to use a larger size memory card (251 or 1019). ****************************************************************************** 3) LANGUAGE ****************************************************************************** This game uses the Japanese language and has little use of English. Written Japanese makes use of three main syllabaries: kanji, hiragana, and katakana. (A syllabary is a writing system where symbols represent syllables.) Kanji refers to Chinese characters used in written Japanese. School children are taught the 1,945 regular kanji (identified by a 1981 governmental decree) used in "official" communications (there are thousands of other kanji in use). In DnMe+, you can choose the amount of kanji displayed in the game (see below). In children's video games, texts are often written entirely in hiragana and/or katakana. Hiragana, meaning "ordinary syllabic script," consists of 48 syllables. It is mainly used to write word endings, but is widely used in materials for children. Hiragana symbols appear flowing or "feminine." Katakana, meaning "part (of kanji) syllabic script," also consists of 48 syllables. It has various uses, including foreign words and emphasis (like bold or italics in English). Katakana symbols appear angular or "masculine." Romaji refers to the system where written Japanese is represented by the Latin (or English) alphabet. This guide uses romaji versions of Japanese names used in the game. The corresponding Animal Crossing names are included in brackets. The author apologizes for mistakes in translation. ****************************************************************************** 4) DIALS ****************************************************************************** Instead of a "qwerty" keyboard, Doubutsu no Mori e+ uses "dials" for typing. You select a collection of dials by pushing the "Y" button. They are: 1) Hiragana 2) Punctuation 3) Katakana 4) Latin alphabet (English letters) 5) Numbers 6) Symbols/Pictures In each collection, you flick the analog stick down to obtain more choices. The hiragana and katakana dials first show five symbols, arranged in a blue semi-circle around the analog stick, clockwise from left to right. As you point the analog stick toward each of the five, you will see five symbols appear in a red semi-circle. To choose a written symbol, you: 1) Point the analog stick toward one of the blue symbols 2) Press the "A" button 3) Point the analog stick toward one of the red symbols 4) Press the "A" button 5) Press the "X" button to modify the symbol, if desired The red semi-circles display the symbols in the customary Japanese vowel order of "a," "i," "u," "e," and "o," clockwise from left to right. The blue semi- circles show the "a" sound using different consonants. For example, from the default hiragana position, if you point your analog stick up towards what looks like a backwards "5," you will see the syllables "sa," "shi," "su," "se," and "so" appear in the red semi-circle. The modifications either reduce the size of the symbol (for various purposes) or add diacritical marks (called dakuten and handakuten) that change the syllable's consonant. The consonant order from the default position is: 1) a (i u e o) 2) ka (ki ku ke ko) (": ga gi gu ge go) 3) sa (shi su se so) (": za ji zu ze zo) 4) ta (chi tsu te to) (": da ji zu de do) 5) na (ni nu ne no) 6) ha (hi fu he ho) (": ba bi bu be bo) (circle: pa pi pu pe po) 7) ma (mi mu me mo) 8) ya (yu yo - ~) 9) ra (ri ru re ro) 10) wa (wo n , .) The hiragana for "so" and "ri" on the DnMe+ dials may be different from what appears in other sources, such as DnM+ e-Reader cards. In the other collections, make a choice by: 1) Pointing the analog stick toward one of the blue symbols 2) Pressing the "A" button 3) Pressing the "X" button to modify, if desired Press the "B" button to backspace or delete. Use the cross pad to move the cursor. Press the "R" button (and, sometimes, right on the cross pad) to made a space. Press down on the cross pad to make the end-of-line/return symbol. Press the "Start/Pause" button when finished. ****************************************************************************** 5) MOVING ****************************************************************************** You can move your DnM+ player to DnMe+! This page appears to be describing how: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ngc/gaej/moving/index.html The DnMe+ saved data uses 57 blocks, but in order to save letters, NES data, and designs on the same card as village data, use a larger DnMe+ memory card (251 or 1019). Place your DnM+ memory card in Slot B and your DnMe+ memory card, with or without a village, in Slot A. If the DnMe+ village has already been created, there needs to be at least one empty house. Start the DnMe+ game. Totakeke will appear if you are establishing a new village. A villager will appear if the town has already been created. Choose "I'm new" to move your player. (See below.) Similarly, [Rover] Mishiranuneko (or Unknown Cat) will speak to you on the train. (See below.) If there is more than one player in the DnM+ town, choose the name of the player you wish to move. When you arrive at the DnMe+ village, [Tom Nook] Tanukichi will greet you and escort you to the home acre so that you can choose a beginner's house. You will find a Work Uniform outside [Tom Nook's] Tanukichi's store, but you will not have to perform his tasks. Things that transfer: your player's name, birthday, catalog (including Donkey Kong 3, Punch-Out, and the Nintendo Bench), fish & insect inventories, personal patterns. Things that do not transfer: money, any items or letters that your player is carrying, catalog items available in DnM+ but not in DnMe+ (for example, Mah- jongg or the redesigned Mailbox). Your DnM+ village and player will still exist, available for continued play. ****************************************************************************** 6) GETTING STARTED ****************************************************************************** Just like Animal Crossing, if you haven't created a village, the first animal you meet is Totakeke. Here are his menu choices after he asks you if you are ready to go: 1) I'm ready to go! 2) Before I go ... ...a. Rumble Settings ......i Rumble: ON ......ii. Rumble: OFF ...b. Sound Settings ......i. You only have six spaces for your character and town names. If you are the first person to move into your village, he will ask you for an additional name, using the Roman alphabet, after he asks you for your name and the name of the town. For this name, you have eight spaces. It is believed that this name is used as part of a filename when using an SD memory card to transfer game data. Just as in Animal Crossing, your responses to [Rover's] Mishiranuneko's questions will determine your player's sex (number 4) and face design (numbers 2, 7, 8, and 9). Here are his questions: 1) Is the time correct? (if you are the first to move into your village) ...a. That's right! ...b. That's wrong! ......i. [enter time] ......ii. You're sure? .........1. Oh, yeah! ...b. Just a little ... ****************************************************************************** 8) TANUKICHI'S TASKS ****************************************************************************** In Animal Crossing, [Tom Nook] Tanukichi took a break between tasks in order to finish preparing a package. He asked you to possibly do favors for villagers. He does not do this in DnMe+. To refresh your memory, here is the task list: 1) Change into your uniform 2) Plant flowers and trees 3) Meet villagers (six in a new village) and [Tortimer] Kotobuki 4) Deliver a piece of furniture 5) Write and mail a letter (it doesn't matter what you write) 6) Deliver carpeting 7) Deliver an Axe to the recipient of the letter 8) Write an ad on the [Bulletin Board] Keijiban (again, it doesn't matter what you write) ****************************************************************************** 9) AROUND THE TOWN ****************************************************************************** You can visit [Tom Nook's] Tanukichi's store after hours! Walk up to the door and hit it with your shovel three times. The lights will come on and the door will slowly open. [Tom Nook] Tanukichi greets you in pajamas holding his pillow and follows you ever so slowly around the store. Prices are inflated 20%, though. The only things you can do are sell items and purchase what is displayed. [Tom Nook] Tanukichi sells Party Poppers starting December 16 for use at [New Year's Eve] Countdown. They are also available at his store sales, which offer, at a 20% discount, a full selection of items (carpets, flooring, shirts, furniture, fans, pinwheels, balloons) instead of just one, two or three items. At the [Post Office] Yuubinkyoku, you can save up to 800 letters! You can create up to 5 different files, each file with space for 160 saved letters (8 pages with 20 slots per page). You can decline [Tom Nook's] Tanukichi's offer to build a statue of you as a reward for paying all six debts. Choose the second response, then confirm by choosing the second response again. ****************************************************************************** 11) EVENTS ****************************************************************************** Totakeke can perform live on your birthday! On the Saturday before your birthday, other players can meet Totakeke and leave, with him, birthday messages for you. On your birthday, see Totakeke during the day at the [Station] Eki, hear a special birthday song, and read your birthday greetings! "Watashi" is the most standard one, thus going to the normal type. "Atashi" is a feminine variation of Watashi. "Atai" is to my understanding a really slangy Watashi. "Boku" is a casual word for I or me that's used primarily between male "pals" or friends. "Ore" is a sort of self-confident, bragging way of saying I. "Oira" is a slightly slangy variation of Ore, unless I'm mistaken on this one. Thus they can be used to differentiate between the different personalities." Here are the DnMe+ personalities for the original 218 animals, using AC names: Males Females -------------------------- ----------------------------- Species Cranky Jock Lazy Snooty Peppy Normal ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anteater Cyrano Snooty Pango Nosegay Zoe ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bear Chow Teddy Dozer Ursala Pinky Grizzly Nate Tutu Groucho ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bearcub Murphy Kody Pudge Cupcake Bluebear Maple Vladimir Poncho Cheri Olive ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bird Admiral Ace Anchovy Robin Piper Midge Twirp Jay Otis Twiggy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cat Tom Kabuki Bob Kitty Rosie Kiki Punchy Monique Tabby Mitzi Stinky Olivia Tangy Purrl ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cattle Chuck Stu Petunia Belle Bessie Oxford T-Bone Patty ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Chicken Goose Egbert Rhoda Leigh Ava Hank Betty Hector ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Crocodile Boots Alfonso Alli Liz ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dog Butch Biskit Portia Cookie Bea Bones Maddie Daisy Lucky Goldie ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Duck Bill Derwin Mallary Freckles Deena Scoot Joey Pate Weber Pompom ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Eagle Apollo Pierce Amelia Buzz Quetzal ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Elephant Axel Dizzy Eloise Ellie Paolo Opal ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Frog Camofrog Cousteau Huck Puddles Emerald Wart Jr Ribbot Jeremiah Jambette Tad Prince Lily ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Goat Gruff Billy Sven Velma Chevre Iggy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gorilla Cesar Louie Jane Peewee ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hippo Rocco Biff Rollo Bitty Bubbles Bertha Lulu ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Horse Buck Elmer Cleo Winnie Peaches Ed Savannah ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kangaroo Astrid Marcy Carrie Mathilda Kitt Valise ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Koala Gonzo Ozzie Yuka Huggy Sydney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lion Aziz Rex Leopold ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mouse Limberg Chico Samson Carmen Anicotti Dora Rizzo Candi Penny ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Octopus Octavian ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ostrich Sprocket Queenie Rio Sandy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Penguin Hopper Roald Cube Friga Aurora Puck Gwen ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pig Boris Cobb Hugh Sue E Truffles Lucy Rasher Curly Spork Hambo ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rabbit Gaston Genji Claude Bunnie Coco Snake Doc Dotty Gabi Pippy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Rhino Spike Tank Hornsby Tiara ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sheep Woolio Baabara Eunice Cashmere Stella Vesta ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Squirrel Ricky Filbert Blaire Nibbles Hazel Static Mint Peanut Sally Pecan ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tiger Rolf Tybalt Bangle ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Wolf Chief Freya Fang Lobo Wolfgang ****************************************************************************** 13) VILLAGER INTERACTIONS ****************************************************************************** You can choose your villagers! If you want [Bob] Nikoban in your town and you have [Bob's] Nikoban's e-Reader card, you can scan the card (one per day) at the [Wishing Well] Negai no izumi (second option), and [Bob] Nikoban will move in on the next day. All 218 animals from AC, including a redesigned [Jane] Fiba, are available on Doubutsu no Mori + (DnM+) cards. There are also 60 brand new animals available on DnMe+ cards. You can be a villager's best friend! After you develop a relationship with a villager or islander, they may signal a special bond by making their eyes look like ^_^ and waving at and/or yelling out to you the first time they see you each day or the first time you enter an acre with them in it. It takes many forms: yelps, gulps, yoohoos, etc. Become their best friend by speaking with them often, performing errands for them as much as possible, and sending them letters. This is important for obtaining Totakeke's vocal recordings (see below). You can cure sick villagers! Occasionally, you can enter a villager's house to find them ill, shivering pathetically. Bring them three or four doses, one per day, of medicine bought from [Tom Nook's] Tanukichi's store (he sells one dose every day for 1,200 bells) to cure them. They will reward you with an item not yet in your catalog. (Keep an dose of medicine on hand, just in case a villager is sick on the last day of the month or when [Tom Nook] Tanukichi is renovating his store.) You can listen in on villager conversations! If you see two villagers talking, walk up and press the "A" button to listen to what they say. They may include you in the conversation. Instead of asking villagers for work, they may ask you to deliver a package to another villager. They give you the item as a present wrapped with a blue ribbon. You can open the package and keep the item, but the villager will be irate the next time you see them. Instead, deliver the present and be rewarded, possibly with a gyroid! Other errands include delivering pink letters to villagers in other towns, bringing fish, insects, furniture, wallpaper or carpeting to villagers, and returning misplaced items that have been left on the ground to their owners. Villagers may ask you for your blood type, challenge you to a button-mashing game, or suddenly change into your shirt design without you handing them a thing. ****************************************************************************** 14) COLOR IN DIALOG ****************************************************************************** When you see text in dark green, it is usually words for tools, such as Axe or Net, or for items like fan, pinwheel, clothing, or gyroid. This usually happens when a villager is alerting you that they have misplaced an item in the town, indicating you should seek it and return it to them. When you see text in light/bright green, it is usually words for locations in the town, such as the [Wishing Well] Negai no izumi. Most of these dialogs are descriptive, not asking you to do something. When you see text in dark pink, it is usually the name of a villager. This is usually associated with being asked to deliver either a blue-ribbon-wrapped present or a pink letter (if the recipient lives in another town) to the named villager. If the task is delivering to another town, the other town's name is usually mentioned at least once in the dialog, so you can be alerted and turn down the request, if needed. When you see text in light/bright pink or magenta, it is usually words for events, like [Cherry Blossom Festival] Ohanami or Halloween. It can also refer to GBA minigames like Dodgeball. When you see text in dark blue, it is usually your player's name. When you see text in light/bright blue or cyan, it is syllabary for Game Boy Advance. When you see text in brown, it is syllabary for "hiragana ju u ji katakana bo ta n" ("something" button?). When you see text in purple, it is syllabary for "katakana ko n to ro - ru su te i wwa" (control "something"). The two appear in the same dialog bubble, immediately after one that displays "katakana fa mi ko n" (or Famicom) in pink. ****************************************************************************** 15) PRIVATE ISLAND & ISLANDERS ****************************************************************************** Your town can have up to four tropical islands! While a linked GBA is no longer necessary for riding with [Kapp'n] Kappi, each player has to pay the five debts on their house before visiting their own tropical island, complete with its own bungalow. [Kapp'n] Kappi will ask you to which island you wish to travel. Two new fish, a porcupine fish and a marlin, and two new insects, a large butterfly and a large beetle, are obtainable only on the island. The island comes without an inhabitant. You must scan an e-Reader card at the [Wishing Well] Negai no izumi (second option) to get one of the 18 original or 18 new island animals. The next day, they wash up on the island beach a la [Gulliver] Johnny. Don't forget to revive them! To get the island items, you must repeatedly talk to your islander and bring them pieces of furniture that they specifically request. Each islander asks for about eight items. After a while, they will return a piece of furniture to you, then later request it again. Keep it nearby (drop it on the ground or put it in the bungalow) so that it will be handy the next time you visit the island. Some of the islanders will offer you money for an item in your inventory. You can turn them down if you think the amount is too low, or to hold out for an offer of an island item. Doing so might make your islander mad, though. The first time he visits you (after you press the reset button or turn off/lose the power while playing), he will turn and speak to you, the player/viewer. After the second time he visits, bang on all your rocks with a shovel or axe every day. You may crack, then break a rock, revealing a hole in the ground. Fall into the hole to see where he hangs out. Visiting the RMC can be a weekly occurrence on a random day of the week. Notice the alarm hanging from the ceiling, and prepare for when it activates while you are visiting! [Don] Mr. Racket visits you after the fifth time you press the reset button or turn off/lose the power while playing. He can then be seen in the RMC, too. ****************************************************************************** 17) TOWN DECORATIONS ****************************************************************************** You can install town decorations! (Click the button with a magnifying glass under the picture to see a screenshot of it in the game) 2) Click the button with a money bag on it, under the item you want....it'll take you to a page with a picture of Tsunekichi (Crazy Redd) on it....he will re-state the amount of bells the item will cost. Press the button that says "OK" with a bell bag and happy face on it, then the wiggling arrow button, to continue....XD 3) Now you will choose which acre to put the decoration on...(they always will be placed where the little signs are in the acres, just like with animal houses, Katrina's tent, etc....so, make sure there is a sign in the acre you want it in, before you select where to put it)...select the acre you want on the map grid it gives you, then keep pressing the blue happy face buttons to confirm your choice....after that, click the wiggling arrow to continue, or the green (!) button to change the acre you chose. 4) Now you will put in your town and player names.....It gives you a letter chart to put the names in with, with tabs at the side to change the writing style....the tabs are, hiragana (default), katakana, and English and symbols, in that order....Town name goes first, and player name goes second......the button with a check mark on it is backspace. Once you put both in, a wiggling arrow will appear at the bottom...click that to continue. 5) Now it will confirm everything you have said....it will show the decoration you are ordering at the top, the acre you're putting it in, your town and player names, and the price in bells....press the first green (!) to re-select the acre, and the second one to change your town and player names....press the wiggling arrow to continue. 6) Now it will pause and load, then give you a password for the decoration.....press the button underneath to print it out, or just copy it out onto paper, or whatever..... 7) Now go onto the game and talk to Tanukichi, and select the option to say a password...(not sure exactly what option that is, but it would say something about "aikotoba")..put in the password you got from the website, and Tanukichi will state the acre, price, and decoration you're getting, then ask if you want to order it...say yes (first option), and he will take the money for the decoration....if you don't have enough, you'll have to put in the password again once you do. The data can then be transferred to other devices like PCs and photo printers. ****************************************************************************** 32) OBSERVATIONS ****************************************************************************** When turning on the game, the Nintendo title is in blue, compared to red for AC (and white for DnM+). The DnMe+ title music is remixed, compared to AC. The default Town Tune is as follows: G A G A G E C ? c so ra so ra so (rest) mi (rest) do (rest) random (rest) do - - (rest) In the lower corners of the screen, the day of the week is displayed in Japanese kanji. The grab bag with two NES games and a K.K. aircheck arrives in the mail attached to a letter from your Mother. In the same way that you can group items with the "X" button in your inventory in AC and sell multiple items at one time, you can group letters with the "X" button in DnMe+ and mail multiple letters at one time. It is believed you receive better/rare items when performing tasks for "best friend" villagers. Usually, there are two initial choices/responses after starting to talk with a villager. The second one is always a conversation-ender while the first one usually encourages more talk. When there are three choices/responses and the first choice is a question ending with the familiar hiragana for "ke" (as in K.K.; looks like a lower-case l next to a lower-case t), you've managed to agree to bring them something. Select that response and try to find the name of the item in the following dialog bubbles. (This is where a Japanese guide with an index really helps.) Another time when there are three choices/responses is when you next speak to a villager that has previously asked you to deliver a blue-ribbon-wrapped present (or pink letter) and you've completed delivery. The villager is asking for feedback on how well the gift was received. You can use the medicine to cure your player's bee stings. At the fishing tourneys, you can get a free Fishing Rod from Chip if you aren't carrying one in your inventory. Large Bass measure from 50 to 70 centimeters. Some of the fish shadows have been reassigned (the Coelacanth's shadow is now as big as the Arapaima's). Sometimes when you are at the island dock, you will see the large Marlin shadow swimming up toward the top of the screen, too far away to catch with your Fishing Rod. If you hop into Kapp'n's boat, the large Marlin shadow will be waiting for you at the village dock when you hop out of Kapp'n's dingy. Could this be a way to catch a Marlin in the village instead of from the island? (So far, the author has failed to catch the fish (or tire?) at the village dock.) Villagers raise their arm, as if scratching, when there is a flea infestation. Turnips that get into the "Lost & Found" or are stored in the island bungalow will not spoil. Turnips left on the ground on the island will disappear. The DnMe+ turnip price mechanism appears to function the same as in AC. Joan's prices vary between 71 and 129. Tom Nook's price can still "spike" at exactly eight times Joan's price on the previous Sunday. The author suspects a "spike" price occurs about 40% of the time in DnMe+. You can pluck and carry planted flowers (pansies, tulips, cosmos)! Also, white flowers that look like droopy tulips ([Jacob's Ladder] Takane no hana) appear near cliffs, one per acre, when your overall town rating is "perfect." Just as in AC, you can still have a "perfect" (katakana "sa i ko -") town with absolutely no trees in the Train Station, home, Museum, large pond, Wishing Well, and ocean acres. You can now set your gyroids to the music in your house, and have them stay timed exactly even after you leave and re-enter! In AC, they would just start moving as soon as you entered the room, wrecking the timing you had on them before. In animals' houses, they would each pause for a second and then start, so they would all start on the right time. Now in DnMe+, it's like that in player's houses too! During the Harvest Festival, the Franklin "trick" (find Franklin, talk to Franklin, enter building in same acre as Franklin: Franklin remains in same place while you retrieve another set of silverware) does not work. The icon of diaries dropped on the ground outside is not the same as that of a sapling. It now looks like a manila mailing envelope. After scanning e-Reader cards at the ETM, the letter arrives immediately instead of having to wait until the next day. There is no ink meter when writing letters. ****************************************************************************** 33) GUIDES ****************************************************************************** Four Japanese guides for Doubutsu no Mori e+ have been published: The Nintendo guide (ISBN4-09-106114-1), 2003, 232 pages, 5.75x8.25 in. The NintendoDREAM guide (ISBN4-8399-1218-1), 2003, 144 pages, 7.25x10.25 in. The Enterbrain guide (ISBN4-7577-1556-0), 2003, 224 pages, 5.75x8.25 in. The Futabasha guide (ISBN4-575-16396-1), 2003, 272 pages, 5.75x8.25 in. More information can be found here: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ngc/gaej/koryaku/index.html If you know little Japanese, the author recommends using the NintendoDREAM guide because of its superior index. If you can read Japanese, the author recommends using the Futabasha guide because it seems to have the most information. As usual, the Nintendo guide has the best images of animals, items, etc. ****************************************************************************** 34) OFFICIAL HOME PAGE ****************************************************************************** http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ngc/gaej/ ****************************************************************************** 35) THANKS ****************************************************************************** I have been playing this game since May 1, 2004.
