# Preparations for the Old Computer Challenge More Info: https://dataswamp.org/~solene/2024-06-24-old-computer-challenge-v4-announce.html ## Dotfiles Dotfiles for various BSDs I have i3 and xterm configured. Sway shouldn't be a hard upgrade to make either when the time comes. Well, I thought I had xterm configured. Turns out I forgot to back it up when installing Haiku on "gwinn". I recreated it rather easily, thankfully. ## Computers ### Dell Dimension 4700 ("sixdollar") I got this computer at an auction. I paid 6 USD for it. Considering inflation, I paid as much for it as Michael MJD did for his $5 Windows 98 PC. * CPU: Pentium 4 * RAM: 4GB * GPU: Nvidia GeForce 7800 * OSes: Windows XP and NetBSD ### PowerMac G4 ("olivia") I got this computer at IndyClassic. * CPU: PowerPC G4 * RAM: 1GB * GPU: ATI Rage 128 Pro * OSes: Mac OS 9, Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger", NetBSD ### Dell Latitude D510 ("michigamme") I got this computer on eBay. I bought it for VB6 development. It was certainly my favorite computer for a while. I even used it to write some of this by using SSH to see if I could access a UNIX environment. * CPU: Pentium M 740 * RAM: Dual-Channel 1GB * OS: Windows XP ### Dell Latitude D630 ("gwinn") I got this computer at an auction. I paid 10 USD for it. This laptop taught me that Dell Latitudes of this era are well-built computers. * CPU: Core 2 Duo * RAM: 2GB * OS: Haiku ### Lenovo ThinkPad X220("stt", stands for secret third thing) A Thinkpad I got last year, probably to put 9Front on. * CPU: Intel 2nd Generation (Sandy Bridge) Core i5 * RAM: 2GB * OS: OpenBSD ### ASUS eeePC 900 ("richmond") I got this computer for twenty USD off of eBay. Interestingly, both "sixdollar" and "gwinn" also come from the Richmond, Indiana area. At least presumably so, as that's where the auctions were. I got it for running FreeBSD as its wiki said it was compatible, but something went wrong with it. Eventually I made some silly posts on Mastodon and it became the Fediverse's definitive NetBSD laptop. :-P * CPU: Intel Celeron M * RAM: 512MB * OS: NetBSD, of course * Quirk: Monitor has inverted colors at the hardware level. ### Smartphone Probably stick to SDF and other SSH and Telnet fun. I probably can make Termux the only program that can use internet. Text editors like vi and ed are nice on a smartphone too. ## Social ### SDF A nice social network with good retro support. I use it also as an alternative to cloud word processors. Vi rules! I may be able to set up a Mastodon client here too. ### Escargot Modern MSN Messenger server. I probably can get a version of it on Windows XP. ### eWorld Mac BBS, if OS9 plays nicely with the Wi-Fi adapter. If it doesn't, it may run in Classic Environment under Tiger.
